Bookham Invitation Day success for Esher Bowls Club

08 Jul 2018

The inaugural Bookham Invitation Day for mixed rinks teams attracted entries from Albury, Burpham, Epsom Park, Esher, Pippbrook and Wonersh bowls clubs. They were welcomed by the Bookham Ladies and Men's Captains before handing over proceedings to the main organiser Steve Edmonds. The visiting teams each played each of the 6 Bookham teams in a 5 end match with the target being 30 ends for the day. However the visiting teams did not compete against Bookham, but rather 'fought' between themselves for the Jack Clatworthy Cup, whilst the Bookham teams were ranked for their own separate prize.

In the event, the excessive heat with a temperature hovering around 30 deg C and with only brief cloudy respites from the strong sun, meant that the later matches were reduced to 4 ends each giving a total for the day of 28 ends. Play was interspersed with a 2 course lunch and at the end was rounded off with afternoon tea, cakes and scones. The bar was open throughout to help quench the thirsts of the 48 players on the green.

There was some excellent bowling on display, but no more so than from Esher Bowls Club who deservedly were awarded the Jack Clatworthy Cup for the year until they defend their winning position in 2019.
