Bookham Members progress in Surrey Competitions

30 Jun 2023

Surrey Ladies Triples

Susan Mullins, Prue Miles and Jo Shaw won their first round on Wednesday 31st May against Ewell Village with a score of: Bookham   21  Ewell Village 15.

The same team but with Lesley Brownsill standing in for an injured Jo Shaw met with Cheam Fields on Wednesday 7th June and took the match to an extra end to win.

They will play their third round against Sutton at home on Wednesday 14th June at 2pm. Supporters are very welcome.

Surrey Men's Triples

The team of John Goodhall, Graham Tring and Steve Mullins managed to win their 1st round match on Tuesday 6th June against a team from Sutton Bowls Club.

The final score of 15-14 looks closer than it probably was owing to the fact that they conceded 4 points on the last end!

The team recognised a tough challenge ahead when they met a Cheam Fields team away on Tuesday 13th June. Unfortunately they came up against very strong players to lose 6 - 26. We now wish them well going forward.

A similar outcome was experienced by the team of Gary Draper, Phil Burge and Steve James as they fought a tough match against an Epsom Park team. The Bookham team stayed competitive until the last 2 ends for them to lose 13 - 23.

Surrey Men's Pairs

John Goodhall and Graham Tring played their 2nd round match against an Ashtead team on Thursday 8th June in which John gave a superb exhibition of Lead bowling. The opposing Skip said that it was possibly the best bowling he had ever seen, so that the Ashtead team became demoralised. The match was conceded to the Bookham team after 16 ends with a score of 21 - 6. Their 3rd round match is against Sutton next Thursday.

Also on the 8th June, Phil Burge and Gary Draper triumphed following an unlikely early position of being 12 – 3 down after 6 ends, recovering to lead after 9 ends. They then were never subsequently headed against father and son pair Ian and Ollie Dixon of Epsom Park.

On the 15th June, John Goodhall and Graham Tring achieved another good win in the 3rd Round of this competition. The final score was 18-9 against a team from Sutton. At the same time, Phil Burge and Gary Draper were playing away against an Ashtead team and won 23 - 14. So now their reward is a home match in the 4th Round against the other Bookham Pairs team of John Goodhall and Graham Tring.

This took place at home on Wednesday 21st June when there was an extremely tense encounter with John Goodhall and Graham Tring beating their fellow Bookham pair of Phil Burge and Gary Draper on the last end 14-12. Having been ahead for most of the match, JG and GT had to hold off a strong comeback from PB and GD who took the lead for the first time in the 16th End – 11-12. When already holding 4 shots, GT had the last bowl on the 17th end and unwisely decided to go for the kill with a 5th but unfortunately moved the jack so they only ended up with 2 shots and a lead of only 1 going into the last end – a learning experience hopefully never to be repeated! GT profusely apologised to JG who then bowled a wood onto the jack in the last end which the opponents were unable to shift. The match was played in great spirit and friendship.

A difficult evening on Thursday 29th June for the Bookham pair of John Goodhall and Graham Tring in a match which turned out to be the area semi-final of this competition.
They played an extremely strong pair from Chipstead and, although they tried to keep them at bay, they eventually lost 9-21. They were pleased to have got so far in their first year in this competition and are already looking forward to next year!

Surrey Mixed Pairs

Prue Miles and Steve Mullins met with Julia Cheeseman and Andrew Granat from Cheam Fields last Sunday at Cheam Fields Bowls Club.

Bookham won by 14 shots to 12 in a tight tactical game over 18 ends lasting nearly 3hrs.

Prue & Steve are now drawn against a Sutton pair in the next round.

West Surrey 2 Wood Pairs

Jane Fiducia and Liz Attwood played in the first round of the West Surrey Pairs on Tuesday 20th June versus a pair from Windlesham. This was their first entry into this competition and proved an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately though they were beaten by the more experienced Windlesham pair 15 - 10.

West Surrey Triples

Bookham’s ladies, Jane Fiducia, Prue Miles and Liz Attwood, ventured to Camberley to play their triples match in the evening of Tuesday 27th June. They came up against a very strong trio who knew their rather tricky green well and Bookham eventually went down 26 - 13.
