Bookham Bowling Club

The Club was founded in 1933 following an Agreement, dated 11th February 1933, between Bookham Social Service Bureau and Alfred Longhurst, a local landscape gardener, to execute and complete a Bowling Green in Great Bookham Recreation Ground for a total cost which was not to exceed £200. The Contractor handed over the completed Green in a condition which was ready for play on 5th June 1933.

The Pavilion and Green have been progressively improved over the years, largely through the efforts of the Club Members. The ground is leased from Mole Valley District Council which owns the Recreation Ground, on which football and cricket is played by local teams.

Since 1935 the Club has been open to men and women bowlers and there is an extensive programme of Men’s, Ladies and Mixed friendly matches against other Clubs, as well as many Club competitions. The Club enters teams in several National and Surrey County Competitions and Tournaments. On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, as well as Friday evenings, members can enjoy social “Club bowling afternoons”.

We are one of the larger Clubs in Surrey with a Playing membership in 2026 of 67 men and 43 Ladies, together with a further 52 Social (non-playing) members. In addition to the summer outdoor bowls season we have a Short Mat indoor section which meets in the Old Barn Hall on Monday evenings during the winter.  Weekly Darts and social events take place in the Pavilion.

New members are always welcome and we offer a comprehensive programme of coaching for both new bowlers and those who wish to brush up their skills.
