Closing Drive 2019 Report

29 Sep 2019

Sunday 29 September; with the BBC forecasting the remnants of Hurricane Doris dropping 50mm of rain across Surrey we held our closing drive.

Light rain drizzled at the start of the event where 12 teams of 4 bowlers were randomly picked by their nominated skips.

Starting off with the traditional "Spider" game where Richard Wilson managed to navigate his bowl nearest to the left foot of the musical squawking chicken! His to look after until the opening drive in 2020! He won a tub of Roses chocolates for his efforts.

Fierce competitive bowling then took place over the 2 x 6 ends of bowls (plus 2 additional ends), first 6 measuring only the nearest bowls with the 1 metre stick and then traditional bowls to complete the afternoon. Nervous glances across the rinks were noticed as the winners score board showed one team winning by the margin of 15 on the last shot.

The winning team was skipped by David Brownsill with Paul Barrett, Robin McMinnies and Jane Fiducia who each collected a bottle of wine for their efforts.

A magnificent American supper table was laid out by Janice Begent and Sue Pearson assisted by Shirley Prentice and Jane Fiducia from all the plates of food provided by the bowlers. Puddings only followed when most of the first course was eaten.

The 14 prize raffle consisted of items from a Xmas pudding to a pineapple, water melon to a jig-saw which all helped to raise £38.50 for club funds.

Thanks were given by the Mens Captain to all that helped make the afternoon a huge success and to Chris Sheppard for just popping in to open the bar and staying all afternoon!

Great community spirit by all to end our season.
