Bookham Bowling Club News story

National Tony Allcock Competition

13 Jun 2026

Bookham's expedition to Epsom on the 26th May for Round 1 was to prove a surprising event....

Bookham started well on Rink 4 with Bill, Phil, Liz and Jo enjoying a 10-1 lead at the 6th end, with our other rink behind 2-7 (Jenny, Christine, Steve C & Graham). So Bookham 12-8 up. Regrettably, Epsom bowlers then found their touch and ran out winners 42-20.

Arrrgghh... you may think it ends there, but no! The following morning Epsom advised us that they had fielded an underaged player and Bookham were to be given a walkover.

On the night, Epsom were worthy winners and our progress in the Competition is both fortunate and courtesy of Epsom's sportsmanship and prompt admission to Bowls England.

We enjoyed Epsom's hospitality and enjoyed a fine 'spread' after the game.

On the 13th June we travelled to Sutton full of hope for our 10am Round 2 match. Dry weather with sunny interludes.

Bookham were in this match at half way, winning 10-3 on one rink and losing 2-12 on the other.

On rink 3 Bookham held their nerve and ran out winners 15-14 (Jenny Spurr, Steve C, Chris Wooler & Graham Tring).

On rink 4 a strong Sutton team pulled away from our determined Bookham team (Bill & Jo Shaw, Liz Attwood  and Steve Mullins who was sub for Phil Burge) to win 24-4.

We enjoyed our crisps and biscuits and wished our hosts good fortune in this competition going forward.
